Abstract

Graduate employability is a growing issue within the modern education and labour markets since nowadays academic degrees cannot be considered long-term employment guarantees. This paper will review the skills development programmes aimed at improving the employability of graduates by evaluating the role of the higher education institutions, the government programme, and the industry-led trainings. It highlights that employability is determined by both technical skills and transferable skills such as the ability to communicate, work as part of a team, digital literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The paper will review the effectiveness of organised programmes like internships. Apprenticeship, vocational training, entrepreneurship development programme and digital certification platforms in bridging the education and the workforce expectations among graduates. It also examines how such efforts facilitate work-readiness, career adjustability, and professional proficiency. On a descriptive analytical technique using secondary sources, the research results that graduates who participated in systematic skills improvement programmes are better prepared to the workplace and enhance their career opportunities. However, the effects of such programs are in most cases curtailed by poor coordination between the industry and the academia, prejudiced access of training opportunities and obsolete curriculum design. The research finds that integrated skill-based education, enhanced institutional-industry partnerships, and training frameworks based on inclusive policies can be used to bolster the employability outcomes with regards to the changing labour market demands.
