Abstract
View PDFHarmonic distortion in three-phase induction motors is a major power quality issue caused primarily by the widespread use of nonlinear loads in modern electrical systems. These harmonics distort voltage and current waveforms, leading to increased losses, overheating, noise, and reduced motor lifetime. To address these problems, various filtering techniques have been developed, including passive, active, and hybrid filters. This paper presents a comprehensive study on harmonic mitigation in three-phase induction motors using a hybrid filtering approach. The proposed configuration combines passive and active filter components to achieve effective harmonic suppression under industrial operating conditions. MATLAB/Simulink is used to model and analyze the system, considering practical data from induction motors rated at 7.5 kW and 11 kW, representative of cement mill applications. The simulation results demonstrate that the hybrid filter significantly reduces total harmonic distortion compared with conventional passive and active filtering methods, thereby improving overall power quality and system performance.
