Abstract

This study explores the many-sided functions of social media in today's journalism, taking into account both the vast opportunities and the vast challenges it creates. Social media platforms have transformed the face of news reporting, information collection, and public outreach. They offer journalists with unimaginable access to minute-to-minute information, allow for instant dissemination of news, and offer direct public interaction. This immediacy makes possible breaking news to be conveyed to worldwide audiences within seconds, sometimes even skipping traditional gatekeepers. Social media is also a platform for citizen journalism, widening sources of news and bringing marginalized voices into the mainstream debate.Yet the digital revolution has daunting challenges. The pace at which disinformation and misinformation are spread through social media, partly facilitated by algorithmic prejudice and echo chambers, is a real threat to the integrity of journalism and public trust. The pace and magnitude of information can compromise accuracy and adequate fact-checking processes, ultimately undermining the credibility of news organizations. The use of social media metrics also has a tendency to contribute to sensationalism rather than substance in reporting, and could damage journalistic ethics. The dominance of platform-based models of content distribution creates fundamental issues of economic sustainability for traditional journalism and independence of news organizations. This paper examines the opportunities and challenges of these and emphasizes the imperative that journalists evolve in the new media landscape without sacrificing professional standards and ethical practice. It emphasizes the media literacy, fact-checking, and social media responsible interaction as major tools to overcome the complexity of contemporary journalism.
