Dr. S. Muthulakshmi Reddy stands as a towering figure in the history of Indian social reform, renowned for her relentless crusade against systemic injustices and gender-based discrimination in Tamil Nadu. Her primary contributions targeted deeply entrenched social evils, most notably the Devadasi system—a traditional practice that institutionalized the exploitation and prostitution of young girls under the guise of temple service. Through fierce legislative advocacy, she spearheaded the Madras Devadasi (Prevention of Dedication) Act, successfully criminalizing the practice despite intense conservative backlash.
