Ceftazidime–avibactam is an important β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combination used for the management of serious infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, including organisms producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases and certain carbapenemases. Owing to the chemical sensitivity of ceftazidime and the distinctive physicochemical properties of avibactam, the development of reliable stability-indicating analytical methods is essential for assessing drug quality, degradation behavior, formulation stability, and shelf life. The present review provides an in-depth review of the analytical methods reported for the simultaneous determination and stability assessment of ceftazidime and avibactam in pharmaceutical formulations and related matrices. Special attention is paid to chromatographic methods, in particular reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), as well as spectrophotometric and other emerging analytical approaches. Important aspects of method development such as chromatographic conditions, detection strategies, sample preparation, forced-degradation studies, degradation routes and identification of potential degradation products are discussed. Regulatory requirements for demonstrating specificity, accuracy, precision, linearity, robustness and stability-indicating ability are also considered. The potential use of analytical quality by design (AQbD), green analytical chemistry principles and advanced hyphenated techniques for improving the reliability, efficiency and environmental sustainability of the method is also highlighted. By integrating current analytical approaches with regulatory and scientific perspectives, this review aims to provide a practical framework for the development and validation of robust stability-indicating methods for ceftazidime–avibactam and to identify future opportunities for more sensitive, selective, rapid, and sustainable pharmaceutical quality-control strategies.
