Marketing consulting has always traded on one deceptively simple promise: if a firm can name the constraint that throttles growth, it can design an intervention that releases that constraint faster than competitors do. In practice, the promise is hard to cash. Modern growth systems span channels, teams, technologies, and customer touchpoints, so the “bottleneck” is rarely a single broken tactic. It is more often a mismatch between how customers move through a journey and how the organization measures, prioritizes, and executes that journey. The challenge is methodological: consultants need a diagnostic approach that is rigorous enough to separate signal from noise, yet pragmatic enough to work under real-world constraints such as incomplete data, short decision windows, and political realities inside client organizations. This article develops an empirical mixed-methods toolkit for diagnosing client growth bottlenecks in marketing consulting by synthesizing and recoding findings from a focused corpus of prior empirical and practice-grounded studies and translating them into an integrated diagnostic workflow that can be implemented in engagements with limited primary data collection.
